History of the Carriage House
The 1883 Southern Exposition (Louisville, KY) Gate House was purchased by the Howards to be used as a barn and Carriage House. It was the first structure on the property that would eventually become their home.
Legend maintains that the family resided in the edifice during the construction of their mansion.
Following a 1901 fire, the Carriage House was restored and relocated to its present position. This work included the addition of the second story.
In fall of 2016, the Board of Directors of the Howard Steamboat Museum embarked upon an ambitious project to stabilize the historic structure and convert the storied building into what would become the premiere event center in southern Indiana. Their purpose was two-fold, to provide financial sustainability for and preservation of the museum through rental income of this luxurious space.
This project created a most unique rental venue featuring quaint nooks, masterfully restored interior spaces, a 4-season porch, pavilion space, warming kitchen, spotless restrooms, a state of the art audio visual system, a bar that serves both inside the building and outside on the porch, quaint nooks, and charming versatility you just can’t find anywhere else!
It is truly a venue for all purposes! Yet, it maintains it’s timeless charm with architectural details and style you will find everywhere you look. It is said that the versatility of the space makes the place. Well, this amazing architectural beauty surely lives up to that statement!
